hi! i am syd :)
I am a lover of the earth, a dancer, a bit of a clown, an artist, and someone who cares deeply about the wellbeing of human and more-than-human beings in our world.
I am majoring in Environmental Science with a Freshwater & Terrestrial Ecology Emphasis at Western Washington University, as well as studying topics around healing relationships with self, land, and community in resistance to global power structures at WWU’s Fairhaven College.
I am so grateful to have the opportunity to travel for the next 10 months on the Fairhaven Adventure Learning Grant (the ALG), a self-directed independent study abroad program. Although these are likely to adapt and change with my learning, some of the questions that I developed my proposal for this time abroad around are:
What sustains action toward ecological and social healing/justice?
What can reciprocal lifeways teach about decolonial and post-extractivist futures?
What are alternative structures to the framework of development?
What does it mean to center Indigenous voices in environmental research?
How can science partner with land and community?
What lessons can I learn from the people and more-than-human beings of the Amazon?
Ultimately, I don’t know exactly where this journey will lead me, and what lessons it will teach. My main goal is to form meaningful relationships with people and the ecology of Peru and Bolivia, and to keep myself open to all that I can learn from those connections.
